How to Own Your Voice

How to Own Your Voice

Layne Beachley is one of Australia’s most successful athletes and a true ambassador for living a bold life. Layne talks to our Ella Baché CEO Pippa Hallas and shares her three habits for success and owning your voice.

The most successful female surfer in history, Layne Beachley AO has not only excelled in her sport but has long been a passionate advocate for women’s issues. She started her Aim For The Stars Foundation to provide support and scholarships for young women and she’s been an influential voice on a range of issues, from the environment to the gender pay gap in surfing.

Now an in-demand motivational speaker, corporate trainer, and presenter, if anyone knows how to own her voice it’s Layne.  She is one of my favourite Aussie women and I feel so fortunate that she shared her story with me. I loved hearing about her own bold moves and I’ve dedicated a chapter to her story in my book Bold Moves: How to Stand Up, Step Out, and Make Your Next Bold Move. Here are just a few of some of her valuable insights into living a bold life:

1. CLARIFY YOUR VISION

“My model for success is all about clarifying your vision,” Layne shares. “Get really clear on how it is that you want to feel because that will determine what you want and what decisions you make after that. My vision as an athlete was to become world champion. My vision today is actually more centred around how I want to feel versus what I want to achieve.”

2. BUILD A DREAM TEAM

“When you know how you want to feel that helps you decide who you surround yourself with. Build yourself up with a team of people that hold you accountable and also support you,” suggests Layne. “Now I choose only to surround myself with quality people to ensure I live a quality life. I lost my mum when I was six years old so my dad’s always been my rock: he’s been my source of inspiration, my source of courage.“

3. TAKE ACTION DAILY

“If you know how you want to feel that will dictate what actions you take. I want to feel excited and elated and energised when I wake up every day,” Layne explains. “And if I’m not, then that vision becomes my accountability, and I ask myself, ‘Why am I not feeling energised and excited today?’ Did I party too hard? Am I working too hard? Am I compromising my sleep? Am I travelling too much? Am I saying ‘yes’ to things and it’s not a ‘hell yeah’? That becomes my accountability partner. So get really clear on how it is that you want to feel because that will determine what you want and what decisions you make after that.”
