Now that we all agree a daily sunscreen is essential and of course, our No.1 anti-ager questions still remain around SPF, formulations and the ever growing market that ensures it does not leave you strapped for choices. While summer is still turning up the heat, Ella Baché beauty expert Carly Bennett shares her knowledge on the six key lessons you need to know when protecting your skin.
Six key lessons, below.
#1. How do I know that the sunscreen I am using is safe?
Study the ingredients, know what you are using and make your purchase from a reputable skincare brand. It is imperative that it has SPF factors & broad spectrum protective ingredients, first and foremost. The bonus with Ella Baché sunscreens is that they are enriched with Shea butter, jojoba oil, and super fruit antioxidants to help with skin healing, preventing moisture loss and powerful antioxidants to fight free radical damage.
#2. How important is the daily application of sunscreen?
The stats are scary, between 95%-99% of skin cancers in Australia are caused by sun exposure, so in answer to your question...VERY. We have come a long way with sun care and recent developments now allow us to use lightweight broad spectrum sunscreens under our make-up. Ella Baché Great Facesaver is the perfect daily defence against the sun. Remember, up to 80% of UV radiation can penetrate light cloud cover, so it doesn’t have to be sunny to burn!
#3. How do SPF 30+ & SPF 50+ differ?
UV radiation reaches the earth in the form of UVB and UVA rays. UVB radiation plays a key role in skin cancer, and SPF refers mainly to the amount of UVB protection a sunscreen offers. Thus, higher SPFs can help. SPF 30: Blocks 97% of UVB (3 in 100 photons penetrate) & SPF 50: Blocks 98% of UVB (2 in 100 photons penetrate).
#4. How early should you apply sunscreen before getting in the water?
It is recommended to apply sunscreen 20 mins before any sun exposure so when going in the water, allow 30 mins to be safe and allow the sunscreen to penetrate and activate.
#5. How often should I re-apply?
We recommend every 2 hours. Water, sweat & towels can remove sunscreen from certain areas so I always say, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
#6. What are some tips for staying safe this summer?
Re-application of sunscreen, keep hydrated with h20, wear protective clothing, eye wear & hats.
